JBLE to celebrate Earth Week

The 50th observance of Earth Day is April 22 and Joint Base Langley-Eustis personnel plan to celebrate Earth Week, April 23-27, by taking part in “Acts of Service” across both installations.

To promote the celebration, environmental personnel from the 633rd Civil Engineer Squadron and 733rd CED set up events to engage, educate and excite the JBLE community about conservation efforts. 

“One of the main reasons that we recognize Earth Week here at JBLE is to inform the workers and residents of all the environmental programs,” said Donna Haynes, 733rd Civil Engineer Division environmental protection specialist. “We want them to know what they do at work and at home has many ways of effecting the environment, and getting them involved with nature trail clean-up, boat tours and informational fairs are great ways to provide hands-on education.”

Haynes says the JBLE community can do their part to help protect the environment through the following events:

April 23

  • Fort Eustis clean-up of dry retention ponds and mosquito breeding site survey from 9-11:30 a.m. at the Warrior Café.
  • Free document shredding and E-waste recycling from 9 a.m. to noon at the Langley Exchange parking lot.

April 24

  • Fort Eustis Nature Trail maintenance and clean-up next to Army Community Services, building 650.
  • Tree Trimming class from 9:30 a.m. to noon at the Langley Education Center.

April 25

  • Fort Eustis wildlife boat tours at 9 a.m., 11:45 a.m. and 1 p.m. All interested personnel must meet at 733rd Civil Engineer Division, building 1407.
  • Storm drain marking from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Langley Visitor Center.
  • A poster contest from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Booker Elementary School.

April 26

  • Eastern box turtle survey at Fort Eustis from 9-11 a.m. at building 1407. 
  • Langley Nature Trail maintenance from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Worley Road.

April 27

  • Balfour Beatty Community Earth Day Celebration from 3-6 p.m.
  • Arbor Day tree planting ceremony from 10-11 a.m. at the Langley Community Commons.

Personnel can also pick up landscaping mulch at Fort Eustis for organization building beautification purposes from 8-11 a.m. April 23-27 by appointment only and using government vehicles only. To schedule pickup, call 878-5225.
