Service members network toward next career

By Airman 1st Class Monica Roybal 633rd Air Base Wing Public Affairs

Joint Base Langley Eustis hosted various employment organizations during a job fair at the Fort Eustis Club, March 15, 2018.

The job fair was held to connect transitioning military members with potential employers by providing an opportunity to network with representatives from various industries and agencies. Approximately 300 job-seekers attended the event in search of their next career.

The Soldier For Life – Transition Assistance Program partnered with the Army Community Service and Airman and Family Readiness Center to bring over 70 employers to discuss opportunities with job-seekers.

Representatives from federal, state and local government agencies were in attendance, along with various technological, retail and service companies.

“We are very selective in our recruiting process,” said Daniel Konik, Newport News Police Department police officer and former U.S. Air Force staff sergeant. “We try to get the best of the best and that’s why we gravitate toward military veterans.”

The event was open to all service members and families, as well as community members with installation access.

Members preparing to transition out of the military were able to make connections and prepare for their upcoming civilian careers.

“It can be hard for military members to transition out of service,” said U.S. Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Sharon Harder, USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) gunner’s mate. “I think it’s awesome that we get opportunities like this to get our foot in the door and become recognizable, so these companies can pull us from our uniform straight to a job.”

This was the first of two job fairs in 2018. The partnered organizations are planning a second event, scheduled for fall 2018.
