AFRC, ACS offer classes for Military Saves Week

By Staff Sgt. Teresa J. Cleveland 633rd Air Base Wing Public Affairs

The Airman and Family Readiness Center and Army Community Services at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia, will participate in Military Saves Week Feb. 27 through Mar. 3, 2017 to encourage U.S. service members and families to build financial savings.

As part of America Saves Week, MSW is a Department of Defense campaign which seeks to motivate and educate service members on the importance of having long-term and short-term saving goals to gain financial stability.

“What we’re finding is a lot of people don’t have that emergency savings set aside,” said Darlene Morgan, Army Community Service financial counselor. “This is one week that we really want to emphasize the need to save, and encourage and show them ways to save.”

With a theme of “Set a goal, make a plan and save automatically,” service members, retirees and dependents can learn from financial advisors ways to spend less money in their everyday lives, as well as ways to set money aside for an emergency fund, vacation fund or any large purchase.

Service members and families can register and attend classes such as:

-        Kickoff Proclamation Signing and Blended Retirement System Class

-        Thrift Savings Plan Lunch and Learn

-        Coupon Savvy Shopping Tips

-        Cooking on a Budget

-        Blended Retirement System

-        3 Keys to Saving

“We’re providing a variety of classes on important things within the military today, such as the TSP which is a big part of the new blended retirement system,” said Morgan. “Saving money is more important than ever because you never know what the future may hold.”

In addition to the classes, financial advisors recommend taking the MSW pledge to save money at www.militarysaves.org. Pledging does not involve spending or donating any funds, but rather taking the pledge to make a plan and save money throughout the year. The website includes daily tips, savings tool and success stories from individuals who have taken the pledge previously.
