Army divers inspect Third Port to ensure mission readiness
June 21, 2017 — The 74th Engineer Dive Detachment deep sea divers participated in an underwater training exercise to sharpen their skills at Joint Base Langley Eustis on June 5, 2017. Two weeks later, the detachment assigned to the 92nd Engineer Battalion, inspected the piers at Third Port, located at Fort Eustis, to determine if repairs were required to keep the port operational. “Third Port is the Army’s main vessel East Coast port,” said U.S. Army 1st Lt. Nate Cardinal, 74th Eng. Dive Det., 92nd Eng. Btn., executive officer. “Third Port (staff) suspect there may be some erosion from beneath the piers. This could potentially weaken the structurally integrity and make it unsafe for heavy equipment and people to be working on the piers.”... MORE

Army welders fuse their mark on Third Port
May 10, 2017 — Among the vessels at Joint Base Langley Eustis’ Third Port sits a shop that keeps boats afloat through meticulous detailed work. The 558th Transportation Company, 10th Battalion, 7th Transportation Brigade (Expeditionary) welding shop ensures ships’ crews stay safe underway through quick and reliable metal fabrication services within the port. While the metals technologists work solely on ship materials, their job encompasses an array of detail oriented work, from a boat’s hull to pipes on its air conditioning unit. “Welding is insanely important,” said U.S. Army Spc. Anthony Cole, 558th Transportation Company allied trade specialist. “When you look around, anything you look at has welds on it, has been machined and put together somehow. If you don’t have a good weld, it’s a danger to anyone who uses that item.”... MORE

History, heroes walk among us
April 26, 2017 — Twelve members from the longest running military service organization in the United States, the Legion of Valor, toured Joint Base Langley-Eustis, April 21, 2017. Founded originally as the Medal of Honor Legion in 1890, the Legion of Valor was later chartered by an act of Congress in 1955, adding U.S. Air Force Cross recipients to the organization. Legion of Valor members are recipients of the nation’s highest recognition for heroism in combat, either receiving the Distinguished Service Cross and Navy Cross to the Congressional Medal of Honor or Air Force Cross, and are honored through the organization... Third Port: pivotal point for Army transportation
February 28, 2017 — Crisp air whips around at the mouth of Skiffes Creek on the James River, as a small tug boat glides along the black water, easing to a halt alongside a pier. U.S. Army Soldiers jump out of the watercraft and begin throwing ropes to each other, securing the boat to the pier at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia, Feb. 22, 2017. This 40-acre pier complex, known as Third Port, houses U.S. Army vessels in a deep-water port, providing safe harbor for the watercraft fleet. Services work together: Operation Resolute Endeavor II
December 8, 2016 — U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force personnel assigned to Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia partnered with U.S. Navy service members assigned to Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story, Va., to participate in Operation Resolute Endeavor II Dec. 5 through Dec. 9, 2016.
