Wounded warriors prove ‘life without limbs is limitless’

— The Newport News police and fire departments competed against the Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team in a seven-inning game, April 15, 2017, to raise awareness for the sacrifices and resiliency of the nation’s veterans. The WWAST is comprised of veterans and active-duty members who lost limbs while serving in the military since 9/11. The members’ amputations range from above the knee to below the elbow, and they hope to educate others that “life without limbs is limitless.”...

Small town friends become hometown heroes

— Driving down the highway, foliage covering either side of the road, two friends watch in awe, as a car in front of them flips over, landing on a set of train tracks. Slamming on the brakes, they came to a screeching halt next to the crash. The friends rushed to the car and began yelling, as they searched for survivors amongst the inflated air bags and wreckage. Born Under Fire: Soldiers, Airmen learn to maintain air assault weapons

— Along a half-mile radius at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia, large warehouses filled with 300 different training simulators and approximately 3,000 computer stations provide a real-life training experience for U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force helicopter maintenance students. In those warehouses, instructors and course developers assigned to the 128th Aviation Brigade transform approximately 6,000 aviation maintenance, logistics and leadership students into technically qualified aviation maintainers and logisticians as tactically proficient aviation maintenance leaders every year. The 128th Avn. Bde. earned its name, ‘Born Under Fire,’ when it was temporarily formed during Operation Just Cause in Panama in 1989. The brigade served there until its deactivation in 1995, and was then reactivated in 2012. ...

Third Port: pivotal point for Army transportation

— Crisp air whips around at the mouth of Skiffes Creek on the James River, as a small tug boat glides along the black water, easing to a halt alongside a pier. U.S. Army Soldiers jump out of the watercraft and begin throwing ropes to each other, securing the boat to the pier at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia, Feb. 22, 2017. This 40-acre pier complex, known as Third Port, houses U.S. Army vessels in a deep-water port, providing safe harbor for the watercraft fleet.
