Army, AF offer COOL education benefits to service members
June 14, 2017 — To prepare service members for their future in the civilian job market, the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force launched the Credentialing Opportunities On-Line program in 2015. Through the COOL program, the military helps veterans compete for jobs in the civilian sector, decreasing the population of unemployed veterans. Through the program, enlisted service members can obtain certifications and licenses to not only enhance their current work performance, but enhance their likelihood of civilian employment after they leave the service... Underwater welding: Army divers keep Third Port afloat
June 7, 2017 — In order to sharpen their skills, the 74th Engineer Dive Detachment deep sea divers participated in an underwater training exercise at Fort Eustis, June 5-9, 2017. During the exercise, the detachment, which falls under the 92nd Eng. Battalion, 20th Eng. Brigade, practiced welding in a tank in preparation for a salvage project scheduled for the end of June at Third Port. A salvage project is any piece of equipment, vessel or ship that requires repairs due to damage from a sea-stay, or overuse that may require construction support to return to its normal state. For this salvage project, the divers plan to inspect Third Port’s piers to determine if repairs are required and if they have the capabilities to perform them... MORE

Oh, deer: JBLE environmental ensures wildlife aids mission
May 31, 2017 — Joint Base Langley-Eustis is comprised of roughly 11,000 acres, 8,000 of which are part of the natural forest landscape of Fort Eustis. In charge of preserving the natural resources across those 8,000 acres, enabling mission success across the installation, is the 733rd Civil Engineer Division environmental element. One of their most crucial roles is maintaining the deer population. This ensures the livelihood and protection of the installation’s wildlife, while also maintaining adequate training areas for U.S. Army Soldiers... MORE

Army welders fuse their mark on Third Port
May 10, 2017 — Among the vessels at Joint Base Langley Eustis’ Third Port sits a shop that keeps boats afloat through meticulous detailed work. The 558th Transportation Company, 10th Battalion, 7th Transportation Brigade (Expeditionary) welding shop ensures ships’ crews stay safe underway through quick and reliable metal fabrication services within the port. While the metals technologists work solely on ship materials, their job encompasses an array of detail oriented work, from a boat’s hull to pipes on its air conditioning unit. “Welding is insanely important,” said U.S. Army Spc. Anthony Cole, 558th Transportation Company allied trade specialist. “When you look around, anything you look at has welds on it, has been machined and put together somehow. If you don’t have a good weld, it’s a danger to anyone who uses that item.”... MORE
