Army quartermaster: A vessel’s living compass
June 29, 2017
— After months at sea, the ocean starts to resemble the desert, but watching the sun rise and fall over the open ocean provides as much direction to him as he does for the ship. For U.S. Army Spc. Miguel Ruelas Trejo’s, 335th Transportation Detachment, 7th Transportation Brigade (Expeditionary) quartermaster, the sunrise and sunset are his favorite things about working aboard the General Frank S. Besson-class logistics support vessel. “When you are out there and you don’t see land for a while, everywhere you look, 360-degrees, you see the same thing: the sky, clouds, the horizon and water,” said Ruelas Trejo. “That’s the view day in and day out.”...

Army divers inspect Third Port to ensure mission readiness
June 21, 2017
— The 74th Engineer Dive Detachment deep sea divers participated in an underwater training exercise to sharpen their skills at Joint Base Langley Eustis on June 5, 2017. Two weeks later, the detachment assigned to the 92nd Engineer Battalion, inspected the piers at Third Port, located at Fort Eustis, to determine if repairs were required to keep the port operational. “Third Port is the Army’s main vessel East Coast port,” said U.S. Army 1st Lt. Nate Cardinal, 74th Eng. Dive Det., 92nd Eng. Btn., executive officer. “Third Port (staff) suspect there may be some erosion from beneath the piers. This could potentially weaken the structurally integrity and make it unsafe for heavy equipment and people to be working on the piers.”...

Underwater welding: Army divers keep Third Port afloat
June 7, 2017
— In order to sharpen their skills, the 74th Engineer Dive Detachment deep sea divers participated in an underwater training exercise at Fort Eustis, June 5-9, 2017. During the exercise, the detachment, which falls under the 92nd Eng. Battalion, 20th Eng. Brigade, practiced welding in a tank in preparation for a salvage project scheduled for the end of June at Third Port. A salvage project is any piece of equipment, vessel or ship that requires repairs due to damage from a sea-stay, or overuse that may require construction support to return to its normal state. For this salvage project, the divers plan to inspect Third Port’s piers to determine if repairs are required and if they have the capabilities to perform them...
