Wounded warriors prove ‘life without limbs is limitless’
April 19, 2017 — The Newport News police and fire departments competed against the Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team in a seven-inning game, April 15, 2017, to raise awareness for the sacrifices and resiliency of the nation’s veterans. The WWAST is comprised of veterans and active-duty members who lost limbs while serving in the military since 9/11. The members’ amputations range from above the knee to below the elbow, and they hope to educate others that “life without limbs is limitless.”... MORE

Charting the way: Woman sets paths for others
March 29, 2017 — At the age of 13 she defended her friend from the uncomfortable approaches made by an older gentleman at church. To this day she continues to be a voice for justice and equality for others. For Claudia Lynch, who is now the Army Support Activity Deputy Command judge advocate, even the smallest achievement was an extraordinary victory. “Whenever I see injustices I try to address it, and I have done that all my life,” said Lynch. “I always stood up for the kids that were picked on or bullied. I have always had that in me – that desire, that passion to protect those who can’t protect themselves.”... MORE

Spouses Luncheon brings services together
March 22, 2017 — Spouses from Joint Base Langley-Eustis and Norfolk Naval Station came together for a Joint Services Luncheon at the Ft. Eustis Club, March 16, 2017. Connecting with veterans through unique therapy
March 17, 2017 — Throughout her weekly meetings and tasks, Jamie Reed takes moments to stare at the foliage outside her office window. During those brief moments, Reed looks forward to the one day of the month when she can get her hands dirty working alongside service members and civilians to take care of garden plots at the Hampton Veteran Affairs Medical Center’s horticultural therapy garden. Soldiers compete during simulated combat scenarios
March 14, 2017 — U.S. Army Soldiers assigned to the 128th Aviation Brigade at Joint Base Langley-Eustis participated in a week-long NCO and Advanced Individual Training Platoon Sergeant of the Year Competition, March 6 through March 9, 2017. The competition was designed to test different skills that are expected of every Soldier in the U.S. Army, regardless of their rank or profession. Throughout the competition, Soldiers were tested in various ways. They completed a 12-mile road march, fitness tests, written exams and performed close-quarter combat in a simulated wartime environment, which kept competitors mentally and physically challenged. ... National Nutrition Month: Puts Best Fork Forward
March 8, 2017 — National Nutrition Month is an educational campaign organized every March by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, which is designed to emphasize the importance of developing and maintaining healthy eating choices and physical activity habits. This year’s theme for the campaign is ‘Put Your Best Fork Forward,’ which acts as a reminder that each bite counts and how simple changes in food choices can have positive effect over time. The theme is geared toward encouraging individuals to start with small changes in eating habits, such as preparing meals at home or making healthy selections while out. ... MORE
