JOINT BASE LANGLEY-EUSTIS, Va. — JBLE-Eustis hosted a Holocaust Days of Remembrance event April 29 to honor the survivors, the people who spoke out against injustice and the individuals who lost their lives during the Holocaust.

Living in fear

JOINT BASE LANGLEY-EUSTIS, Va. — Most people wake up every morning with a list of things they need to accomplish at work or errands they need to run before they can relax at the end of the day. Imagine waking up every morning in hiding and afraid. Imagine waking up every morning only to remember you’re in a concentration camp because of your religion, race, political opinion or sexual orientation.

Kitty Saks, a Holocaust survivor who also lost 27 family members, was placed into a Catholic convent, at age nine, under an assumed name, Rosette Nizolle, for her safety and became a hidden child of the Holocaust. This year’s theme for the Holocaust Days of Remembrance commemoration is “Learning from the Holocaust: The Strength of the Human Spirit” and will be held April 23 through April 30, 2017. Days of Remembrance: Lessons learned from the Holocaust

JOINT BASE LANGLEY-EUSTIS, Va. — Imagine constantly living in fear and wondering when you will be detained or killed. Being afraid to be seen on the streets, faced with losing your family members, job, home, business or place of worship all because of your ethnicity, or religious and political beliefs or physical and mental capabilities. This is what life was like for Holocaust survivor, Kitty Saks, who was born in Vienna, Austria, and lived through those atrocities, and ultimately lost 27 family members.
