Mustangs and Legends
LANGLEY AIR FORCE BASE, Va. -- Ms. Betty Blake, one of the original Women Air Force Service Pilots who served during World War II, watches as Capt. Leo Lemelson, F-22A Aerial Demonstration Team safety observer, explains the inner workings of the Raptor during the Ohio air show Sept. 30. According to Ms. Blake’s son, George, she started flying at 14 without her parents’ knowledge because they wouldn’t have allowed her to be a pilot. Ms. Blake spent all four years of the war as a transport pilot ferrying 36 different types of aircraft including the P-51. Ms. Blake was one of 51 legendary aces, veterans, WASPs and crew chiefs honored at The Gathering of Mustangs and Legends in Columbus, Ohio, Sept. 27-30. (U.S. Air Force photo/Capt. Tracy Bunko)
