Locals volunteer at Langley pharmacies

By Airman 1st Class Kimberly Nagle 633rd Air Base Wing Public Affairs

The volunteer program at USAF Hospital Langley pharmacy allows active-duty Service members, spouses, dependents and retirees and other members of the community to volunteer their time within the hospital.

Volunteers will serve as a partnership with the Airmen who are working in the pharmacy.

"In the hospital pharmacy we have a total of 35 volunteers, 20 actively volunteering," said U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class Sable Van Fredenberg, 633rd Medical Support Squadron pharmacy technician and volunteer coordinator. "We also have several on-call, giving us the flexibility in staffing our pharmacies."

Volunteers are trained on how to work with a patient from the beginning of the medication pick-up process to the end. They are also trained on pharmacy kiosk, which is connected with the satellite pharmacy located in the Exchange.

"Sometimes patients just want to receive their medication and get home to rest," said Michelle Acker, pharmacy volunteer. "We are always polite and friendly and try to provide the best service possible."

With the hospital pharmacy supporting no less than 400 Service members and family members each day, activating and filling nearly 1,200 prescriptions, volunteers expedite the process of getting the patients in and out as quickly as possible, said Van Fredenberg.

"The volunteers are a key element in our process," said Van Fredenberg. "Our volunteers are the face and the voice of the pharmacy."

Prospective volunteers can sign up at either pharmacy, and will receive training by pharmacy staff.

For more information, contact the main pharmacy through the USAF Hospital Langley Appointment line at 225-7630 or the satellite pharmacy at 764-7799.
