Auto Skills Shop provides unique services to Langley

By Airman 1st Class Kimberly Nagle 633rd Air Base Wing Public Affairs

In an effort to better serve its customers, the Auto Skills Shop at Langley Air Force Base, Va. has extended its availability and is now open Sundays.

The shop offers cost-effective services to Langley community members who are looking to do self-help vehicle repairs, while getting assistance from certified mechanics.

"At the Auto Skills Shop, you can do self-help on your vehicle or a friend's vehicle," said Ronnie Miller certified technician and manager. "If you are capable, you can do it yourself, or if you need assistance we have employees who can lead you in the right direction."

The shop also does everything from Virginia state inspections to full engine repair and diagnostics by their on-duty technicians.

"The shop benefits all of the people in the Air Force. Dependents and retirees can all use the facility," said Miller. "Lots of people like to work on their own vehicles; now they a have a place to do it."

Senior Airman David Young, 633rd Civil Engineer Squadron driver operator, said he utilizes the shop for the convenience and space.

"If the shop wasn't here, I would have to pay someone to work on my car, knowing full well I could do the work myself," said Young.

According to Miller, for services done by the on-duty technicians the rate is $75 an hour, which could save someone up to $20 per hour in comparison to civilian shops.

The shop operates on a first-come-first-serve basis throughout the day, and contains parts and tools for all types of vehicle maintenance, including machines that can assist with both basic and advanced auto repair.

The Auto Skills Shop also provides a computer hobbyists can use to look up directions to fix specific vehicles.

"The convenience of the shop and the discounted prices are something the Langley community can take unique advantage of," said Miller. "We are one of a kind."

The Langley Auto Skills Shop is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and now open Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
