The holiday season from Thanksgiving through New Years is a time filled with joy and happiness. It's a time to gather with family and friends and celebrate the blessings we share as Americans. Unfortunately, the holiday season can also be a time of pain and sorrow for those who fail to follow the fundamental elements of personal risk management. As professionals, we must continue to exercise sound judgment and take prudent action to avoid the senseless loss of life.
In preparation for this holiday season, I want all commanders, supervisors, co-workers, and Wingmen to re-emphasize the commitment necessary to enjoy a safe and memorable holiday season. Address the hazards associated with the holidays and remind our Airmen to conduct themselves in a professional and responsible manner. Let's ensure our personnel have all the tools they need to guarantee the well-being of their families and their fellow Airmen. Take this time to conduct safety briefings and stress the unwavering use of seat belts. Discuss the importance of driving within posted limits and at speeds that are safe for local weather conditions. Emphasize the importance of appointing a designated driver before they go out and drink. Be sure to highlight safe practices at home too. Of particular note, with current recalls on over 10 million toys, we need to be careful when picking out those gifts--make sure they are appropriate and safe for our young ones.
Motor vehicle mishaps accounted for 72% of our fatalities last year. Take time with your Airman and know their holiday travel plans. Check to see if they have designated rest stops along the way. If their travel plans don't make sense, suggest the need to establish alternate plans. As we celebrate the upcoming holiday season, I ask that we take a moment to reflect on the lives of the 22 Airmen lost to ACC in the past year. Let's put extra emphasis on safety during the holidays in an effort to ensure our Airmen return safely. Best wishes and have a safe and enjoyable holiday season.
