JBLE firefighters strengthen regional readiness through Hampton Roads partnership

By Master Sgt. Tyrona McKinley 633d Air Base Wing Public Affairs

Firefighters assigned to Joint Base Langley-Eustis routinely stand ready to protect the installation, but their mission extends beyond the installation fence line through partnerships that strengthen emergency response capabilities across Hampton Roads.

Most recently, firefighters from JBLE Fire and Emergency Services joined the Hampton Division of Fire and Rescue in responding to a commercial structure fire at the Hampton/NASA Steam Plant. The JBLE crew supported the operation by protecting nearby exposures and conducting interior fire attack, helping to contain the spread of the fire and reduce potential damage. Their efforts provided critical reinforcement to Hampton firefighters, allowing crews to more effectively subdue the blaze and bring the incident under control.

The response reflects the longstanding mutual aid partnership between JBLE and neighboring fire departments, reinforcing a shared commitment to protecting lives, preserving property and sustaining emergency response throughout the region.

“Readiness is built through strong partnerships long before an emergency occurs,” said Col. Stephen Anderson, 633d Air Base Wing commander. “Our firefighters train and respond alongside our local counterparts because protecting this community is a shared responsibility. When we combine our capabilities, we strengthen our ability to answer any emergency while ensuring resources are available where they’re needed most.”

Mutual aid agreements across Hampton Roads enable military and civilian fire departments to share personnel, equipment and expertise during major incidents, natural disasters and other high-demand emergencies, increasing interoperability and making the most of available resources.

The partnership also demonstrates responsible stewardship of emergency response resources by allowing agencies to share specialized capabilities rather than duplicate them, strengthening the region’s ability to respond.

“The partnership with Joint Base Langley-Eustis is an outstanding example of how military and local governments work together to serve our community,” said Clint Ross, military liaison for the City of Hampton. “Our longstanding relationship allows us to respond as one team when emergencies demand additional resources. That level of coordination strengthens our ability to protect the people who live, work and visit Hampton.”

For JBLE firefighters, that collaboration is built on shared training, mutual trust and a common commitment to protecting the communities they serve.

“Our firefighters take tremendous pride in standing shoulder to shoulder with our Hampton Roads partners,” said David Rose, JBLE Fire Chief. “Whether we’re responding on base or supporting our neighboring departments, we’re one team with one mission; protecting lives. Those relationships are built through trust, and shared experiences, and they make every department stronger when our communities need us most.”

As military and civilian emergency responders continue to train together and answer calls side by side, the relationship between JBLE and Hampton Roads fire departments remains a critical component of regional preparedness, ensuring communities across the Peninsula receive timely, effective emergency response whenever and wherever it is needed.
