JOINT BASE LANGLEY-EUSTIS, Va. –
JOINT BASE LANGLEY-EUSTIS, Va. – Joint Base Langley-Eustis strives to be a safe installation for all personnel coming through the gates.
It is the responsibility of every driver to follow all traffic laws and signs to create a safe environment. Personnel must do their part and be accountable for their actions while operating a vehicle on the roads of JBLE.
“As the occupational safety manager, general safety on both Langley and Eustis is extremely important,” said Alex Ramirez, 633rd Air Base Wing occupational safety manager. “For myself and the 633rd ABW Safety Team, that phrase emphasizes the importance we place on safeguarding our Airmen and resources. We also understand the importance of the mission, and how unsafe practices, injuries, and property damage can affect its success.”
Most incidents on JBLE roads are minor fender benders.
According to Ramirez, slowing down, staying vigilant and planning ahead are key to reducing these events. Drivers should also keep their emotions in the back seat to prevent road rage.
“Please follow the laws and requirements when operating any type of vehicle on base,” Ramirez said. “We all have a responsibility to provide safe and secure roads and we can only do that if we know and follow the motor vehicle and operator laws.”
Tips to remember when on JBLE, from the 633rd Security Forces Squadron:
- When a speed limit sign is not posted, the speed is 25 mph
- Speed through residential areas must not exceed 15 mph
- Cell phone use is unauthorized, except when hands-free
- Traffic violation points add up and can lead to suspension of driving privileges on base
One of the unique aspects of being on a military installation is the activation of barriers when driving on and off base. These are used when there are security concerns. When they aren’t activated, drivers can become complacent about driving on or near them. Drivers will know they’re coming up to barriers when they see the “Barrier Activated When Flashing” sign and diagonal stripes on the street.
“We like to remind drivers to use caution and follow the speed limits when in the vicinity of all barriers,” Ramirez said. “These barriers are designed to stop gate runners attempting to access the base illegally at a high rate of speed. My best advice is to be aware of your surroundings at the gates and slow down when entering and exiting JBLE.”
