Center offers computer-based CLEPs

By Airman 1st Class Chase S. DeMayo 1st Fighter Wing Public Affairs

Airmen and family members will soon be able to take computer-based College Level Examination Program tests at the base education and training center here.

The initiative, managed by Saint Leo University, begins in February, said Mr. Paul Sevigny, assistant center director for the school.

"This is a good opportunity for everyone on Langley, said Mr. Sevigny. "It allows the education center to focus more on their tasks while still allowing Airmen to gain college credits."

With the new program, the Langley center joins more than 1,300 national test centers at various colleges and universities offering computer-based testing. By taking a CLEP test in one of the 35 available subjects, students can translate knowledge of a subject into college credit.

With computer-based testing, results are available instantly, said Lynn Crouch, base education and training center flight chief. With traditional, paper-based tests, students often waited four to six weeks for results.

Tests are free to all active duty military members with valid Department of Defense identification. Family members and retirees who wish to take the test must pay a $20 administration fee and $60 per test.

"The best advice I could give someone wanting to take the CLEP test is to study, study, study," said Ms. Crouch. "Check out a study guide from the library and take these tests seriously."

In addition to study guides available at the base library, the online study guides and practice tests are available at www.petersons.com/airforce.

To schedule a test, call Saint Leo University Langley Center at 766-1812.
