Mosquito aerial spraying scheduled for local area

Mosquito aerial spraying at Langley and parts of the surrounding area is scheduled for June 16 through 18.

The flights are scheduled to take place from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Wednesday.

Spraying areas include Langley, Bethel Manor housing, Hampton, Fort Eustis, York County, Poquoson, Newport News, Fort Monroe, Craney Island, the Yorktown Naval Weapons Station and parts of Portsmouth.

An C-130 Hercules will fly as low as 150 feet over the peninsula to train aircrew and spray Dibrom concentrate. After spraying, about 90 percent of adult mosquitoes should be killed. The reduction in mosquito populations may last up to two weeks depending on the size of the area sprayed and how favorable conditions are for new mosquito to hatch.

Beekeepers are asked to keep their bees covered during the spraying operations in their particular area. Anybody with known allergic reactions should stay indoors.

The mosquito hot line number, 225-5591, will be available June 16 through 18 for up-to-date spraying information.
