Pinwheels: A symbol of awareness

By Air Force Airman 1st Class Tristan Biese 633rd Air Base Wing Public Affairs

Children planted pinwheels as a national symbol of child abuse prevention, and to bring awareness to the issues of child abuse at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Va., April 2, 2018.

“The more you see and learn about it, people will then realize that it’s not ok to hit or abuse a child,” said Catherine Barber, Russ Child Development Center child development program chief. “It’s all about education and getting the word out that no kind of abuse should be tolerated.”

Every year the CDC and the Family Advocacy Program work together to bring awareness in April, the month of the military child and child abuse prevention month.

According to Barber, even though pinwheels are planted in the month of April, child abuse is a year round problem and individuals should always stay educated on the topic.

If child abuse is suspected, contact the Family Advocacy Program at 757-764-2427 or contact the local police department.
