4/25/2014 - FORT EUSTIS, Va.  -- After 50 years, retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. Harold Campbell, former 117th Aviation Company, 140th Transportation Detachment commander, received the Bronze Star April 24 at Fort Eustis for his leadership and perseverance during his deployment to Vietnam from Aug. 15, 1963 to May 1, 1964.

Representative Robert Whitman, Virginia First Congressional District representative, and Maj. Gen. Kevin Magnum, U.S. Army Aviation Center of Excellence commanding general, presented the Bronze Star to Campbell in a ceremony at the U.S. Army Transportation Museum.

"Though it was a long time coming, this award's significance has not diminished in the eyes of our nation," said Magnum. "Your commitment to freedom and perseverance in the face of adversity are prime examples of what Soldiers should strive for."

Campbell earned the award for his professional competence and skill, which contributed to the overwhelming success of his command's mission. The 117th Avn. Co. Soldiers' skill and perseverance while working long hours did not diminish, and their performance exemplified the traditions of military service, said Whitman.

"I pursued this award fervently for the past few years, and it wasn't for my own pride," explained Campbell. "My men fought long and hard and deserve every ounce of recognition they can possibly receive, so this award goes out to the men in my unit."
