— The Newport News police and fire departments competed against the Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team in a seven-inning game, April 15, 2017, to raise awareness for the sacrifices and resiliency of the nation’s veterans. Jacqueline Cochran: Beautician to WASPs, trailblazer

— When Jacqueline Cochran was appointed as director of the Women’s Airforce Service Pilots in 1942, she had already made history as the first woman to fly a bomber across the Atlantic during World War II.
