JBLE does its part for Energy Action Month

By Staff Sgt. Natasha Stannard 633rd Air Base Wing Public Affairs

October marks Energy Action Month, and at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia, the energy program teams are working to meet objectives coinciding with Executive Order 13693: Planning for Federal Sustainability in the next decade.

This year, the action month focuses on setting goals for the future such as implementing more sustainable operations to promote building energy conservation, efficiency and management by reducing energy intensity by 2.5 percent, and improving water use efficiency and management measures by reducing potable water consumption by 36 percent by year 2025, said Peter Phan, 733rd Mission Support Group Civil Engineer Division operations flight base energy manager.

JBLE currently hosts projects ranging from weather stripping doors for insulation, installing more energy-efficient lighting, solar tracking skylights and boiler controls, and replacing heating systems saving the installation approximately 1 billion dollars in energy costs and about 334.6 thousand units of energy, said Phan.

The energy team is also looking at solar energy to supplement power grids and geothermal heating ventilating and air conditioning systems, said Phan.

While the installation CE operations flights are heading up many initiatives, for Phan, the most important part of the energy program is educating others.

"With all these projects saving energy and money, the biggest investment we can make is to educate the public on what they can do on a daily basis to help save energy and that is where Energy Awareness Month comes into play," said Phan.

Phan added things that everyone can do to save energy and costs are:
· Turn off lights when not in use
· Keep windows and doors closed
· Unplug items not in use
· Turn off monitors when not in use and at the end of the day
· Turn off water when brushing your teeth
· Keep space heating temperature at a reasonable level
