Fort Eustis resumes operations with upcoming summer activities

By Onyx Taylor-Catterson 633rd Air Base Wing Public Affairs

As COVID-19 restrictions ease, many of the installation’s activities are re-opening. No matter what your interests are, there is something for everyone here, in our own backyard.

If you like reading, the Groninger library summer reading program runs July 5 to Aug. 29.

This reading program is for all ages, divided into four age categories; ages 0 to 4, 5 to 12, 13 to 17 and 18+.  Readers will earn weekly rewards based on the amount of reading minutes they log.

“We are so excited to have our community back in the library; we are working to make this summer’s program amazing with weekly events featuring special guests and activities,” said Kathleen Nichols, 733rd Force Support Squadron librarian. “We want to make 2021 epic!”

Each Wednesday at 2 p.m., the library hosts a celebrity guest for outdoor book readings and other activities. The kick-off event will be July 7, featuring Col. Chesley Thigpen, 733rd Mission Support Group commander, as the celebrity guest.

To register, visit groningerlibrary.beanstack.com, and for more information, visit https://www.facebook.com/groningerlibrary.

The Fort Eustis Community Recreation Center is hosting a variety of arts and crafts classes throughout the summer for children and adults. Classes include spin art, yarn dog and marble art to name a few. To take a class, visit https://www.facebook.com/femwr/.

In addition, the JBLE Aquatic Center Adventure Pool is now open, Wednesday through Sunday, 12 to 5 p.m. This pool features a three-story water slide, whirlpool, lazy river and lanes for lap swimming. Fees apply. To make a reservation, call 757-878-1090.

If outdoor activities are more your style, take an adventure off-post by renting a recreational vehicle or boat. Or stay local and rent a cabin or campsite from the Eustis Outdoor Recreation Center.

Pavilion and party equipment rentals are also available from all outdoor summer celebrations. For more information, visit https://www.jble-eustismwr.com/morale/outdoor-recreation/.

With COVID-19 cases on the downward slope, the JBLE Eustis Youth Sports has also resumed summer camp registrations for the following camps: basketball, soccer, baseball, cheerleading, volleyball, high-intensity interval training and start smart development camp.

Both the Fort Eustis and Langley Information, Tickets and Travel shops remain your one-stop-shop for discounted attractions outside of the installation. If you are accustomed to living on Army installations, you may know this facility as Leisure Travel Services.

Members and their families receive exclusive military pricing for amusement parks and historical attractions. ITT can also assist with vacation planning. For more information, visit https://jble-eustismwr.com/morale/information-tickets-travel/.
