633rd SFS remembers the fallen

By Senior Airman Kayla Newman 633rd Air Base Wing Public Affairs

During the week of May 13 through 17, Langley Air Force Base, Va., will hold several events during Police Week to honor those who have paid the ultimate price in the line of duty.

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation to designate May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day, and the week in which May 15 falls would be known as Police Week.

"Police Week is a time where law enforcement departments and agencies can come together and meet one another," explained Tech. Sgt. Jorge Davila, 633rd Security Forces Squadron trainer. "We also get to pay respects to our brothers and sisters in arms that have fallen in the line of duty."

To help honor those law enforcement officers, 633rd SFS is hosting six events open to the base public, not just SFS members.

May 13: Peace Officers Memorial Ceremony at Langley Memorial Park, starting at 7:30 a.m. There will also be an Air Force Security Forces Association/Eagle Chapter Police Week lunch at the Langley Club Chiefs room, starting at 11 a.m. The ceremony and lunch serve as a way to kick off Police Week through remembrance and camaraderie.

May 14: 633rd SFS Booster Club Defenders Challenge at Raptor Town, starting at 9 a.m. The challenge is designed to showcase the type of training that SFS members go through on a daily basis, such as low-crawling, litter carries and high mobility multipurpose wheeled vehicle pushes.

May 15: 633rd SFS Booster Club Golf Tournament at Eaglewood Golf Course, starting at 7:30 a.m. This event is in efforts to build morale and camaraderie throughout the participating units.

May 16: K-9-Redman Demonstration, and McGruff display at the Base Exchange Parking Lot, starting at 10 a.m. SFS personnel will be demonstrating what the K-9 unit does, as well as showcasing vehicles, weapons, gear and other equipment that SFS members may use on a day-to-day basis.

May 17: Security Forces Association Motorcycle Ride at the SFS parking lot, starting at 9 a.m. The motorcycle ride will pay tribute to those that have fallen in the line of duty.

"Police Week pays homage to those that have given the ultimate sacrifice," said Davila. "It is also for those that have taken the oath to protect, defend and fight for the safety of fellow citizens."

Police Week is an opportunity for police officers and the Langley community to enjoy activities throughout the week, all while still paying respects to those who paid the ultimate price in the line of duty.
